Information programs
The idea behind the programs offered is to have honest conversations about the things that for some reason or other, are not passed on, the ones nobody tells you. This information is crucial in helping you make the best possible decision for yourself as you will have a clear understanding of expectations and outcomes because you will be well informed.
We make our most significant decisions of our lives between the ages of 20 and 35, decisions that will stay with us forever, affecting our lifestyles, identifies, finances and opportunities forever.
The main idea that has led me to put together the programs of Informed Life Decisions was about individuals making some of the biggest decisions of their lives without fully understanding these to enable them to prepare and measure expectations in order to ultimately achieve a content, happy and balanced life.
A common element that has stood out for me all these years has been the discrepancy between what we think parenting is and reality, regardless of how much people think they know about making a decision to have a child. Not only there is a lack of information about this, there is also a lack of education and preparation for what will be without a doubt the biggest decision of your life.
I have seen new or more experienced parents give feedback to others about how its’ natural to be a parent, how its not that difficult and how you just get on with it, without being fully honest (with others and, perhaps themselves) about the realities when behind closed doors, the same people would admit to how much they struggle, or how significantly their lives have changed, or even how they experience moments of regret. The main reason for this is not that it’s a mistake to have children, its a mistake to not fully understand what it means to become a parent.
Big decisions vs biggest decisions
If you want to buy a car, you will do a lot of research about what model you like, what can you afford, what is suited to your needs and so on. You need to calculate finances and how you will manage these over a period of time, years in most cases. (use delicate arrow here to point out that This is a big decision. )
If you want to buy a house, you will have to visit a few properties, calculate your money and financial ability covering the next 30 years, you have to calculate how to turn it into an investment, you will consider how much work you need to do on it to turn it into a home. The research is extensive and expensive as experts are paid to complete surveys to provide you with a full analysis of the property. You will then make a decision based on these facts and whilst you will most certainly have a lot of ‘surprises’ when you move in, most of your expectations will be measured on the research you have done before hand. How much research do you do into how much you should contribute for your retirement? How much thought have you given as to whether you will be able to work until the age of 86 or 70 as its currently set in the UK? How aware are you of some very simple planning to manage finances in a way that allows early retirement and a secure financial future? (This is a very big decision. )
So how much research do you do if you want to have a baby? This is by far the biggest decision of anyone’s life and yet most people don’t research any information beyond the age of 2. People want to know how much they need for a cot, a pram, nappies and so on. However any planning stops there. How much does it cost to raise a child up to the age of 18? What is the actual impact on the body, mind and bank? On identity, relationships, mental and emotional health? Huge decision
How much do you as a parent know and understand about the impact of social media on your child’s mental health, self worth, self confidence, relationships, sleep? How much research do you do before deciding to give your child their own phone? What would happen if you said no? How much are you affected by social pressure to give in? (This is very big decision)
